“Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one…HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!”
Now what?! Setting resolutions, turning a new leaf, “new year, new me.” These are all some common phrases that are used to motivate us to embark on bettering ourselves for the next 365 days. However, according to U.S. News, about 80% of resolutions fail by February.

While writing this blog, I find myself thinking back on my contribution to this percentage as I recall how many times I “turned a new leaf “ throughout the entire year. It is my intention that this blog will serve as a source of encouragement to push through any feelings of despair or disappointment so that you may find your inner light.

Why Do We Fall Short?

This prompted me to search for the WHY. Why do we lose that excitement and motivation and become just plain worn out from life. Family conflict, stress from our jobs, failed relationships, health concerns, financial strains, complacency, spiritual warfare—the list could go on and on. These elements of life are inevitable, and can sometimes be completely out of our control. How can we find that jolt to keep us in line with our true desire for change?

The Power of Perception

Cognitive behavior therapy teaches that our thoughts feelings and behaviors are all connected; simply put, our thoughts determine our feelings and behavior. CBT is typically utilized when a person wants to see a behavior change from negative to positive. In life, we will always be faced with negative thoughts, feelings of doubt, being stuck in the same routine and sometimes even questioning self worth. However, it is imperative to learn and accept that these experiences are just that- experiences. We are not bound to viewing the glass as half empty. Choosing to be intentional and finding that spark CAN be the driving force to engage in a worthwhile life. These are some quotes that I have personally found to impact me in keeping my fire lit!

Inspiration

(in·spi·ra·tion /ˌinspəˈrāSH(ə)n/ – the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative)

“Every time you state what you want or believe, you’re the first to hear it. It’s a message to both you and others about what you think is possible. Don’t put a ceiling on yourself.”

– Oprah Winfrey

I believe being a giver or recipient of inspiration is one of life’s most precious gifts. However, as with any gift- one must be receptive in order to receive it. When you find that you are wallowing or being resistant, challenge yourself to be open to receive. Inspiration is not a respecter of source or person.

Purpose

(pur·pose /ˈpərpəs/- the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists)

“We are products of our past, but we don’t have to be prisoners of it.”- Rick Warren, The Purpose Driven Life

and lastly,

“The two most important days in your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why.” – Mark Twain

What is my purpose, do I even matter? Don’t feel alone if you have ever wondered or questioned what your purpose is in life. I chose these quotes and messages for the reader who may have that excitement of new year, new me- but succumb to old negative self talk. Discovering your purpose in life is a fulfilling feeling. Be intentional, and embrace your desire for a life with meaning and direction.

If you’ve ever struggled with a lack of purpose, negative self talk, difficulty in finding motivation then know you’re not alone. These quotes may be fuel to help me in my soul’s dry patch but speaking to someone was also another valid option helping me find my way forward. Consider talking to a counselor, it may be the support to meet your goals you were missing.
